Vietnam: We Could Have Won

Comments

Vietnam: We Could Have Won? So what did we lose? How would we be better off today if back then we had been able to achieve something in Vietnam that we might call victory?

It is just as likely that today we would still be dealing in an unstable situation or would have finally done what we did back then, get out.

The problem in Vietnam, as it is in Iraq, was rooted in the old Geopolitics of exploitation within spheres of influence and a neo version of the same only makes things worse. As long as there is sentiment within our government to keep playing the same old world game, we will continue to seek spurious victory in places that we need not be.

Can we as a people have a positive impact on the world? Sure, we have had and it has most often not been issued out of the end of a gun. Were we to have as much courage in pursuing peace as we do in having others die for us in war, and if we committed as many material resources in its behest as we have in the destruction of differing others, we make peace quicker than it can ever be found in a war that somehow at its end must fortuitously stumble into it.

How so in Iraq? http://islewood.vox.com/library/post/victory-in-iraq-of-a-different-kind-peace.html

Thanks for your comment! I don't disagree at all with your premise. You're coming at this from a different angle, in response to a different question--should we have intervened in Vietnam at all? If we had approached Ho Chi Minh differently--during the Eisenhower Administration--we may have been able to secure him as an ally, versus an enemy. But we did not...instead, we followed the French after their disastrous intervention. Ultimately, that is the foundational question that should be discussed and Just War Theory is probably the best place to start.

My primary point in writing this, and in posting it is that when we do enter into a war--that we do so thoughtfully, deliberately, and that we choose the right strategy--and one that will provide a satisfactory outcome. Many Thanks for your interest and your comment!

John:

I agree with you: “when we do enter into a war--that we do so thoughtfully, deliberately, and that we choose the right strategy.” And, in some respects we might have come closer to following this course in Vietnam than we have in Iraq--at least there we said that we were trying to maintain a legitimately established government.

In our recent involvement in war, it seems to me that our entry into Afghanistan could have ended in a result that rather clearly demonstrates your dictum. Thus, I think it would have been possible to do in Afghanistan what this administration claims it was going to do in Iraq. I think Afganistan is still possible, if we can somehow extract ourselves from Iraq and leave behind a semblance of order.
